New Hampshire Different Names for Things

A frappe in NH is the same as a milkshake in NY. I have no idea why they call it that.

In NH, sprinkles are Jimmies.  In NY, Jimmies are sprinkles. Also Jimmy is the name of my uncle. I don’t know why they call them that. Maybe a guy named Jimmy invented them.

Hayward Farms, Milford, NH;   Kimball Farms, Jaffrey, NH

Kimball Farm Vs. Hayward Farms Ice Cream Battle

All ice cream in NH is good because of their big servings. Mom says the ice cream in NH is creamy and delicious. My dad grew up in NH and he went to both of these places when he was little. We are doing a battle of the ice creams because we went to both of them - one on Saturday, one on Sunday.

Kimball Farms.  Before it was Kimball Farm it was called Silver Ranch and my dad loved it there. Kimball Farms servings are giant.  A kiddy size is for two people. The adult size is for like 7 people to share.  They have many great flavors.  My favorite is Moose Tracks which is very fudgey.  Kimball Farms is nice and they have great seafood and it has a good gift shop.

Hayward Farms. We stopped at Hayward Farms on the way back to New York. Dad remembered it from a long time ago. I had a caramel praline in a sugar cone. It was really good and a pretty big serving - although not as big as Kimball’s.  Dad had a coffee frappe (milkshake). It was really good.  Mom just tried both of ours.

Verdict: I like Kimball Farms more. It was very close but Kimball Farms has bigger servings. And it has more special flavors that other places don’t have.

Porter House, Columbus Circle, Manhattan
We went to this restaurant because it was moms birthday and she wanted steak and cake and this restaurant had both of them. This restaurant has lots of booths which I like for privacy. They also had nice tables with big plants and flowers. For appetizers we had an amazing rigatoni with bolognese sauce. It’s even better than dad’s but dad’s has more love. Mom and I both had it and we both loved it. Dad had stuffed clams with lots of butter. He liked it but it was a little too buttery for me. Then we ordered the porterhouse steak for two but in this case its for three. We got it medium rare except it was a little too rare for me. I like the parts that were cooked more from the edges. We also had hash browns, a baked potato and roasted carrots. The hash browns and carrots were good. The baked potato was bigger than my dad’s head. I loved everything on my plate. For mom’s birthday dessert we had moist soft chocolate cake that had happy birthday written on the plate in chocolate. It’s a great restaurant. One surprise for me was that I saw my dentist Dr. Rob there too. He was at a giant table for like 10 people for someone else’s birthday.

Bunker Vietnamese, Ridgewood, Queens

We went to Bunker because our friend Mara has friends who said it was the best Vietnamese food ever. Mara and her husband David are our friends.  David is English and i don’t think Mara is English. She’s from Chicago. This is their first time on Kid Versus Food because we usually go to the “restaurant” on their deck.  The food there is great too.

Bunker was a little crazy looking inside.  I loved it.  They had posters and stickers all over the walls.  The day’s specials were written on tin cookie trays and hung from the ceiling.  I like that too.

At Bunker I ate some pho. That’s a soup with noodles and chicken (or pork) already in it.  But on the side you have bean sprouts, basil and peppers. I only put bean sprouts in.  It was one of the best soups i ever had.  We also had spring rolls.  They were a little spicy but that’s what I think Vietnamese food is all about. We had some short ribs which is like Korean kalbi. It’s good but not as good as kalbi. We also had bok choy and I liked it a lot too.

We didn’t have any dessert as all they had was pudding.  Instead we got ice cream at Uncle Louie G’s in Williamsburg.  I got chocolate chip cookie dough. it was ok.  Like any other ice cream place.

Overall Bunker is a great place that I want to go back to again.

Atlantic Fish, Boston Mass.

We went to this restaurant because Dad picked it because he thought we would love it. And I loved it. I loved it because it had awesome clam chowder that the restaurant got an award for. I had a cup for an appetizer and it was really great because it was buttery and less bacon flavored. Mom also had clam chowder for her entree and she had it in a bread bowl.  For my entree I had some steamers. This is just my opinion, but I don’t like the bellies as much as I like the tails. Also, the restaurant looked a little like a ship’s galley. I love that style. For dessert, Mom had a peppermint pie that Dad said looked like a pink marshmallow and I had a scoop of peppermint ice cream with chocolate sauce. It’s like a York Peppermint Patty and Yorks are delicious. The waiter put down the desserts and said “That’s a lot of peppermint!” Overall its a really good restaurant.  Maybe we will go there again.

Hamersley’s Bistro, Boston, MA

For Memorial Day weekend we took a trip to Boston because I had never been there, although I’ve been to Massachusetts and to Cape Cod before. We went to this restaurant because my dad knows that the chef Gordon Hamersley always wears a Red Sox hat instead of a chef’s hat.  The restaurant was a fancy, dimly lit restaurant. I got to meet the chef because you can see the kitchen from the dining room.  One really funny thing, the bathrooms had a picture of a woman’s butt (Botero).  For dinner, first I ordered prosciutto with dates. I didn’t love the salty and sweet together - I like them separate. So I ate them that way.  Next, I ordered the duck confit and parsnip puree with maple butter. Those were my favorites.  The parsnips were great because they were really sweet. Then we ordered three desserts.  I ordered chocolate cake with toasted marshmallows and blackberries. Dad got the upside cake and Mom got the pecan pie.  I think my cake was the best. Next was the pecan pie. And third was Dad’s dessert. They were all great but some were greater than others. Overall for me it’s a four star restaurant.

Bar Americain, Midtown West, Manhattan

We went to Bar Americain for Mother’s Day.  My mom is really sweet so I love her.  It’s a really fancy restaurant and we sat on the balcony.  I loved it up there and I was right above the iced lobsters. One thing, for such a big restaurant it had tiny bathrooms and long lines. The food was great. I had a giant cheeseburger, so I could only eat half of it.  Before that we had shrimp cocktail that came with a sauce that Dad and Mom liked but it wasn’t my favorite. So I got some regular cocktail sauce but that had too much horseradish in it for me. So I just at the shrimp plain. We didn’t have dessert - we took a walk and then went to Haagen Dazs.

I liked Bar Americain but going once was enough for me.

Hill Country, Flatiron, Manhattan

We went to Hill Country because my cousin Katelyn  and my Uncle Jimmy were here for St. Patricks Day and we wanted to do something special. It was also Katelyn’s birthday present and her sister Aly was marching in the parade too.  Hill Country was like a lunch room - you went up for your food, picked your food and then you got it. The style was sort of cowboy style in the restaurant.  I personally loved the brisket and the sweet potato. We got sausages, ribs, brisket, sweet potatoes, chicken and macaroni and cheese. The ribs were ok. The sausages we too spicy for me. Uncle Jimmy loved it. Dad ordered too much food so we ate it for three days after!  Me and Katelyn went alone to get our dessert. That was my first time to go alone. We got german chocolate cake. it was unbelievably good. i couldn’t stop eating it.   say its a pretty good restaurant.

The Strand House, Manhattan Beach, California
Mom and I went to Mom’s friend’s house in LA. Their names were Tallu, Hudson, Dan and Melissa. We went to their house for New Year’s Eve and spent the night. On New Year’s Eve we stayed up till midnight. On New Year’s Day we went to  Manhattan Beach to The Strand House for pizza. Mom was there too but she’s not in the picture because she took the picture. The pizza was pretty good. Not as good as New York Pizza but still good. We also had coffee cake. That was great because it was free and it was warm and it was moist. And. the view of Manhattan Beach at the restaurant was really good. The windows were big so we could see the beach. It made me feel relaxed. After brunch we went to the beach. It had nice sand (better than the Coney Island beach which isn’t very clean.) It was fun visiting them because I felt comfortable at their house.

Chocolate Chair, Koreatown, Los Angeles
We went to a dessert restaurant after having Korean BBQ.  They had ice cream, shaved ice and macaroons. Half the restaurant was a make-up store and the other half was Chocolate Chair! I had vanilla banana ice cream that was great. Mom had a shaved ice that had mochi, berries, red beans, watermelon and some other stuff too.  It felt like snow in my mouth.  It was great.

Park’s Barbecue, Koreatown, Los Angeles
Me and mom went to LA to meet my little cousin, Izzy. Dad couldn’t come, he had to work because he has a new job. We went to Park’s BBQ restaurant after we went to the Santa Monica Pier. My Aunt Janny and Uncle Eric took us to there. There’s a nice amusement park at the pier. They have some good rides like a bungy jump and a wave jumper.
At the restaurant they had really good Kalbi (that’s a Korean meat).  It had a special sauce that made it delicious. I also had Chap Chae which is clear noodles like spaghetti but has a special flavor and has vegetables.    Something that made this Korean restaurant cool is that the waiter cooked our barbecue right on the table. Most Korean restaurants have that barbecue. I love that and it’s cool so I can see how they cook it. Also they cut up the meat with scissors not knives…that’s really cool.
Uncle Eric is my mother’s brother. He makes TV shows and that’s a pretty good job. Aunt Janny is going to have another baby. Izzy is two years old and really funny.  They were really nice to us and really generous to us on our trip.

Osteria al Doge, Midtown, Manhattan

We went with my substitute babysitter Aly (my real babysitter was in Ohio).  When Aly isn’t my babysitter she’s also my cousin!  We went there for a Christmas dinner after we went to Rockefeller Center to see the tree and we go to Godiva for chocolates.

At dinner I had pasta fagioli and calamari to start and for a pasta had gnocchi with a veal ragu (they didn’t have bolognese which I wanted).  The pasta fagioli was ok but not as good as the one from Dean’s Pizza which I love.  I ate lots of the calamari.  My gnocchi was good too but I only had a few bites.  I was kind of full and I wasn’t crazy about it.  We brought it home with us.  For dessert I had a really good raspberry and mango sorbet.

I’m glad we went there because its very Christmassy during the holidays and our family tradition is to go to a restaurant after going to see the tree.

Vynl,  Hells Kitchen, Manhattan
We had brunch with Anjali again.  This time not with Shomo though.  Anjali is having twins pretty soon so its going to be really loud at her house.  It’s going to be a crazy house.
We went to Vynl restaurant.  It’s a good, organized restaurant with nice design. It has lots of records on the wall when you walk in.  Records are like CDs but from like a hundred years ago.
I ordered the biscuits and gravy because it sounded good. But I didn’t like the gravy very much.  I don’t know why.  Also, I was really tired because I had just come from my Little League baseball and I had stayed up really late the night before. We went to the Great Jack O Lantern Blaze the night before and the night before that I went to a slumber party and stayed up until 12:30!  I did ok at Little League though…I had a home run. But I was tired all weekend.
My favorite part of brunch was the pineapple juice. I really liked it. Dad had Huevos Antonio which is like mexican eggs. He liked it.

St. James Gate, Upper West Side, Manhattan
We went to St. James Gate because we were having brunch with our friends - the Moog Helluy’s. First we were going to go to Ditch Plains but we didn’t have a reservation because someone in our family forgot and it was really crowded. So we walked over to St. James Gate. My friend Charlotte and I had chicken fingers. It took a really long time to get our food because it was busy there too. I also had pineapple juice. That juice was awesome. The chicken was pretty good - i got four but the fourth was tiny so it really was three.  It wasn’t as good as Ditch Plains’ chicken fingers or Chirping Chicken’s but they were still good.  Dad had an Irish breakfast and Mom had bacon, egg and cheese sandwich.  They liked theirs too.

Hale and Hearty, Upper West Side, Manhattan
I went to Hale and Hearty after school one day with my babysitter Chantal. We went because it was a cold day and we wanted warm soup. That day I got chicken and rice and Chantel got pea soup. My soup was great. Chantel’s was kind of OK. I don’t like pea soup so much but she likes it.
You can also get a side of a sandwich there or crackers if you want.  I got crackers. I like it there because their soup is so good because it’s their specialty. I think they have like 22 soups every day.
Maybe their soups are better than my dad’s, maybe not.
